Salvaged Lands
Salvaged Lands is an ongoing collection of vernacular landscape photographs that I have built over the years. The images range in date from around 1890 through 2004 and cover almost every consumer-available photographic process. The true prizes are pictures with no obvious subject matter or focal point; where the photographer’s motivation is completely unknown. The rest can be categorized into front and backyards, streetscapes, parkland and scenic vistas. The fading, staples, creases, stains and cropping, edge patterns and varied marks make them all the more interesting. The collection is a tiny act of preservation, a cultivated obsession, but one that continuously informs my work.
